If you are arrested for unauthorized possession of a hydrocodone drug, you can face the same level of prosecution and the same penalties as you would for cocaine or methamphetamine. Moreover, you can suffer a loss of reputation as a user of an illicit drug, even though thousands of Americans take hydrocodone drugs legally every day. To get through this ordeal, you need an experienced attorney who fights to protect your rights. At the Law Offices of Ryan E. Lackey, we never forget our first duty is to be your advocate and deliver the best possible results

A brief history of hydrocodone

Hydrocodone is a synthetic opioid used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Knoll Pharmaceuticals in Germany developed hydrocodone in the early 1920s. It demonstrated effectiveness as a painkiller but caused intense euphoria and, like all opiates, proved to be addictive. In 1970, the U.S. Congress passed the Controlled Dangerous Substances Act, listing hydrocodone in its pure form as a Schedule II substance. However, when smaller doses of hydrocodone were combined with other drugs, such as acetaminophen, the resulting product was a Schedule III substance. Knoll Pharmaceuticals later produced Vicodin, a combination of five percent hydrocodone and 500 milligrams of acetaminophen, which gained approval for use in the United States in 1978.

The popularity of hydrocodone products as recreational drugs led to high numbers of overdose injuries and deaths. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then moved to reclassify all hydrocodone products as Schedule II drugs in 2014. These include:

  • EndaCof HC
  • Lortab
  • Norco
  • Vicodin
  • Zohydro ER

Penalties for unauthorized possession and sale of the drug are the same as those associated with codeine, cocaine and methamphetamine, meaning you could be charged with a felony drug crime, leading to years of incarceration.
